Road 155 in Orocovis and PR-992 in Luquillo

Toro Verde sits on Road 155 in Barrio Gato, Orocovis, near the center of the island; the park gives its address as Km 33 in one place and Km 32.9 in another. Discover Puerto Rico, the island's official tourism site, puts the drive from San Juan at about 1 hour 45 minutes, and the park's own FAQ says about 1 hour 30 minutes. The park opened in 2009.

Discover Puerto Rico suggests a rental car with GPS, or transport from San Juan booked with Toro Verde or with Ziplinepr, whose combo packages include transport and lunch. Cruise lines also sell the park as a shore excursion with transfers from the pier. On site, a café sells local coffee and snacks, and the Toro Verde Restaurant serves local dishes on a terrace facing the mountains.

Yunque Ziplining is on PR-992 in Barrio Canta Gallo, Luquillo, which both the company and Discover Puerto Rico put about 45 minutes by car from San Juan. The lines run across a 50-acre private estate on the edge of El Yunque, with views of the national forest. The company sells round-trip transport from San Juan at $110 for one or two people, up to $250 for five, plus tax.

The Monster, The Beast and Luquillo's five lines

The Monster is 2,530 m (8,300 ft, 1.57 mi) long and more than 380 m (about 1,250 ft) high, according to Toro Verde, which calls it "the longest zip line in America." Riders lie in a horizontal flying position and can reach 95 mph. Staff fit the flight gear and take riders to the launch pad. Discover Puerto Rico calls it one of the longest in the world in one passage and the second longest in another.

The Beast is 4,745 ft (1.446 km) long with speeds up to 60 mph, and the park calls it one of the world's longest single-run lines. The regular Zipline tour links seven lines between platforms and takes about 2.5 hours; Discover Puerto Rico counts eight. Toro Bikes is a cable bike circuit with two stations of up to 326 m (over 1,000 ft) and room for four bikes at once, which the park says holds a Guinness World Record as the longest of its kind.

Yunque Ziplining has five lines of 400 to 1,000 ft, each 50 to 100 ft high, plus a hanging canopy bridge and a 10-minute hike. The company says the lines run on double cable, are inspected weekly and meet Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) standards. It gives the tour as about 1.5 hours depending on group size, though its introduction calls it a 2-hour outing. Discover Puerto Rico says the tour ends at a countryside house with local juices and snacks.

Closed-toe shoes, 270 lb and no raincheck

Toro Verde's pages for The Monster, The Beast and the Zipline tour set a 270 lb maximum and a 4 ft minimum height, and the two big lines add a 100 lb minimum. None of them states a minimum age. Toro Bikes takes riders 12 and up, to 250 lb. Every ride needs closed-toe shoes, and nothing may hang loose from riders. Discover Puerto Rico gives a wider range of 100 to 300 lb and heights of 4 to 5 ft depending on the line.

Toro Verde labels its packages, from the $99 All You Can Do pass to the $144.99 tricombos, as final sale with no raincheck and no refund. The park notes that cable speed changes with the wind. Reservations come first, but ride order goes by arrival, and each product page asks guests to be in the park 30 minutes before their tour. Discover Puerto Rico recommends sunblock, bug repellent, sunglasses and water.

Yunque Ziplining takes ages 7 to 68, requires an adult with children 7 to 12, and has no height rule. Riders must weigh under 230 lb, and the company recommends riding tandem with a guide below 70 lb. It turns away anyone pregnant or with a recent injury or surgery. The company asks for light pants and sneakers with good traction or hiking shoes, and it does not allow flip-flops or regular sandals. It suggests bringing rain gear and a reusable water bottle.

Toro Verde combos and Yunque Ziplining's $129 course

At Toro Verde, The Beast costs $59.99, the seven-line Zipline tour $89.99 and The Monster $114.99, each plus taxes and service fees. The Extreme Combo of The Monster and The Beast is listed at $109.99, which is less than The Monster alone. The same $109.99 buys other two-ride combos, such as the Zipline tour with The Monster or The Beast, and three-ride tricombos cost $144.99.

Toro Verde's All You Can Do pass is $99, starts between 8:00 and 11:00 am, leaves out Toro ATV and Toro Trail, and depends on availability that day. The $330 Family Package covers four people with a $50 restaurant coupon, and the $185 Couple Pass covers two combos with a $25 coupon. Discover Puerto Rico says every Toro Verde tour comes with two bilingual guides.

Yunque Ziplining charges $129 plus tax for adults and children alike, with sessions at 8:30 am, 11:30 am and 2:30 pm every day, subject to availability. The price covers helmets, harnesses and gloves, a safety talk, snacks and bilingual certified guides. Its 230 lb weight limit is lower than Toro Verde's 270 lb, and its site gives no cancellation or weather policy.

Before you book

  • Be at Toro Verde at least 30 minutes before your tour time. A reservation holds your day, but the park hands out ride turns in order of arrival.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and leave dangling items behind. Toro Verde requires the shoes on every ride and does not allow anything hanging from riders.
  • Discover Puerto Rico suggests packing sunblock, bug repellent, sunglasses and water for Toro Verde; the park café also sells drinks.
  • Getting there. Discover Puerto Rico puts Toro Verde, in Orocovis near the center of the island, about 1 hour 45 minutes by car from San Juan. It suggests a rental car with GPS or transport arranged through Toro Verde or Ziplinepr, and cruise lines sell the park as a shore excursion with pier transfers.
