From each operator's own website, checked October 22, 2026. How we compare.
Playa La Pared in Luquillo is the closest lesson beach to San Juan. Surfing Puerto Rico meets students there and puts the drive at 40 minutes (its meta description says 45). Discover Puerto Rico's surf guide, updated October 8, 2026, lists La Pared as a beginner beach with a sand bottom and waves usually 3 to 5 ft. It names Surfing Puerto Rico Adventures for lessons and rentals.
Rincón, on the west coast, is about a 2.5-hour drive from Luis Muñoz Marín airport, according to Discover Puerto Rico's Rincón page. Duke's Surf School & Eco Adventures checks students in at Domes Beach on PR-4413, per its TripOutside listing. Rincón Surf School's base is at Route 413 Km 4.4, Interior Road, in Barrio Puntas. It warns that the address usually fails in GPS, so use the map link on its site or call 787.823.0610. It does not say which beaches its coaches use.
Farther along the north coast, Discover Puerto Rico's northwest guide puts Isabela 1 hour 40 minutes west of San Juan, with Aguadilla 30 minutes beyond and Rincón another 45 minutes south through Aguada. It names Jobos in Isabela as beginner to intermediate and Surfer's Beach and Bridges in Aguadilla as beginner breaks, and the board's English guide lists Hang Loose Surf Shop at Jobos. None of the schools in this comparison teach there.
Rincón Surf School sessions last about 3 hours. On the first day, 30 minutes of dry-land training covers the objectives, followed by 2.5 hours of instruction in the water. The school lays out five consecutive sessions. Paddling, catching waves and pop-ups come first, then board control and reading swell, wind, current and tides. The third covers wave selection and basic turns, the fourth getting in and out of the lineup, and the fifth choosing your own spot. It says real learning happens in one 3-hour lesson but several sessions make a surfer.
Duke's 2-hour group lesson starts on the shore with the gear and ocean awareness, then covers spotting beginner-friendly waves, safety and etiquette, and paddling, pop-ups and balance before anyone paddles out. Classes take up to 6 students, and the price includes a board with fins and leash, a rash guard and wax. Its instructors hold ISA and USLA certifications, the listing says. Domes sits over reef, so reef shoes are recommended.
Surfing Puerto Rico's 2-hour lessons at La Pared are built for beginners from age 8, and the operator says intermediates can join; equipment is included. Discover Puerto Rico puts the water at about 78°F to 84°F all year, so wetsuits are rarely needed. Its guide reserves María's, Tres Palmas and Domes in Rincón for experienced surfers, and it says Domes hosts an annual international contest.
October to April brings the most consistent surf, Discover Puerto Rico says, when north and west swells push larger waves onto exposed beaches. September to October and April to May bring smaller waves and fewer people, and summer is calmer still, which suits beginners. The board's northwest guide says the west coast season peaks from December to April and that Rincón has beginner-size waves all year. It warns that a quiet beach can develop stronger currents or bigger waves as swell, wind and tide change, and that Middles in Isabela has strong offshore currents and rocks.
Surfing Puerto Rico and Duke's both take students from age 8. Duke's asks that students be comfortable in the water with basic swimming ability. Its packing list runs to a swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, warm layers, a dry bag, water, snacks and reef shoes, with jewelry and watches left behind. Rincón Surf School publishes no minimum age or swimming rule.
Cancellation terms differ. Rincón Surf School gives a 100% credit, valid two years, for cancellations with at least 24 hours' notice, or a 30% refund if you cannot use the credit. No-shows get nothing, and it grants no medical exceptions. If it cancels for unsafe swell or a public health order, you get a full refund or a free reschedule. Duke's refunds in full with 24 hours' notice or when weather stops the lesson, and charges no-shows the full price. Surfing Puerto Rico shows no policy on the pages read.
Surfing Puerto Rico is the cheapest and the closest to San Juan: $70 for a 2-hour lesson, $160 for three or $250 for five, booked on FareHarbor. Its 1-hour Private Group Surfing Tour starts at $100 and is pitched at corporate outings, school trips and parties. Duke's Surf School & Eco Adventures charges $90 for a 2-hour group lesson at Domes with up to 6 students, and $180, $270, $360 or $450 for two to five lessons. Its private group lesson for up to 4 is $120. Transport costs extra, and the listing suggests tipping instructors 10% to 25%. It sells only through TripOutside; no website was found.
Rincón Surf School charges $120 per person for a private group of your own, $165 for one-on-one coaching and $120 for Guided Adventures, which take experienced surfers to less-known breaks. All three run about 3 hours, and booking several days earns an unspecified discount. A deposit is paid at booking, with add-ons for an extra day, a requested coach or a photo package. The school opened in 1999 and calls itself the longest-running surf school in Rincón; SASS Global Travel bought it in August 2012. It belongs to the FSPR, contracts ISA-certified coaches, and rents short, long and fun-shape boards.
