Plaza Colón, Plaza Salvador Brau and Quinto Centenario

Plaza Colón, by the Columbus statue, is the start for San Juan Tours' 1:30 pm San Cristóbal walk and the 10 am Old San Juan Free Walking Tour. Tour Guide Debbie meets at Plaza Salvador Brau, next to San Francisco Church, and asks guests to arrive 10 minutes early. San Juan Tours sends the meeting point for its 9:00 am El Morro walk by email and lists it as within walking distance of the cruise port.

Spoon's daytime food tour gathers at Plaza del Quinto Centenario, by the totem pole, at 10 am Monday to Saturday and 11:30 am on Sunday. Its sunset tour starts at Plaza de la Catedral. Flavors of San Juan meets at Plaza de Rafael Carrión, 206 Calle Tetuán, in front of the old Banco Popular building, where the guide wears a green shirt. Its El Morro tour meets outside El Convento Hotel.

San Juan National Historic Site, run by the National Park Service, has its headquarters at 501 Norzagaray Street. Its two forts are just under a mile apart, and the park puts the walk between them at 15 to 20 minutes on the sidewalk beside the city walls. The free trolley that once ran through the district is no longer available, according to Wikipedia. Metro Puerto Rico reported a free city service for the 2025 holiday season, Fridays to Sundays from 9 am to 9 pm, with stops including Plaza Colón, El Tótem and Pier 4.

El Morro's six levels and San Cristóbal

Castillo San Felipe del Morro stands on a headland about 100 ft (30 m) high at the western tip of the old city. It was built to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay and is named for King Philip II of Spain. Discover Puerto Rico dates its construction from 1539 to 1790 and describes six levels with cannon-lined walls, tunnels and garitas (sentry boxes). Kite flying on the wide lawn in front is a local tradition, and the views take in the Atlantic, La Perla and the bay.

Castillo San Cristóbal, built in 1783, is the largest fort in the historic site. Its Garita del Diablo, the Devil's Sentry Box, is closed to the public. Both forts have tunnels, but the park says none lead into the city and no tunnel connects the two. The site also covers most of the city walls, the San Juan Gate and Fort San Juan de la Cruz (El Cañuelo) across the bay entrance. UNESCO listed it with La Fortaleza in 1983, and it counted 1,027,264 visitors in 2022.

San Juan Tours' 9:00 am walk passes the Governor's Mansion, the Cathedral and the San Juan Gate before going inside El Morro, and its 1:30 pm walk includes admission to San Cristóbal. Spoon's food tour makes 4 stops with 8 or more tastings and drinks, two of them alcoholic pairings, over about 1 mile (1.5 km). Flavors of San Juan's food tour has 4 to 5 tasting stops, one rum cocktail and either a mojito or mofongo-making activity.

Card-only forts, cobblestones and holiday closures

San Juan National Historic Site accepts only credit cards and contactless payment. The park is usually open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, but its hours page lists no times. Discover Puerto Rico, updated in September 2026, gives 9:30 am to 4:30 pm daily in one section and 9 am to 5 pm in another. The park's phone number is 787-729-6777.

San Juan Tours warns of curbs, steps, stairs and cobblestones on its El Morro walk and does not recommend it for people with severe mobility limits. Strollers and scooters are welcome, though the ground is uneven. Its San Cristóbal walk runs rain or shine except in severe weather, and the company refunds or reschedules when it cancels for weather. Cancellations emailed 48 hours or more ahead get a full refund, and bookings made inside 48 hours are final.

Spoon says its tours "often sell out weeks ahead," especially on weekends and between December and April. Without its optional trip protection (15% extra), Spoon allows cancellations or changes up to 72 hours ahead and gives no refunds after that. Tour Guide Debbie refunds only when the operator cancels, and late arrivals get no refund. Flavors of San Juan notes that Puerto Rico's legal drinking age is 18 and says its food tour cannot cater to vegan diets.

Debbie's $50 walk to Spoon's $149 sunset tour

Tour Guide Debbie's 2-hour history walk costs $50 plus taxes and fees and runs at 10 am on Fridays and Saturdays. The company's FAQ puts groups at 10 to 16 people, led by a licensed guide. San Juan Tours includes fort entry in its prices. Its 9:00 am walk inside El Morro costs $79 for adults and $74 for ages 5 to 15, and its 1:30 pm San Cristóbal walk costs $69 and $64. Both last about 2.5 hours and include bottled water.

Spoon's Walk & Taste food tour costs $139 for adults and $109 for ages 4 to 17 and takes up to 14 guests for 3 to 3.25 hours. Its sunset version starts at $149, at 4 pm plus 5 pm Thursday to Saturday. Flavors of San Juan shows the prices of its food tour, history walk and El Morro tour as seasonal on its site. It also runs a Rum Runners craft cocktail tour and private tours.

The Old San Juan Free Walking Tour meets at 10 am at Plaza Colón for 2 hours and lists no price for its public walk. Its private version costs $200 for up to 15 people. San Juan Tours' 4-hour VIP private tour is listed at $145 for groups of four or more and $165 for three, and the page does not say if that is per person. It includes pickup at most San Juan locations, and the company pitches it to cruise passengers but states no return-to-ship guarantee.

Before you book

  • Entry to both forts is free for US citizens and residents on October 27 and November 11, 2026, the last two National Park Service fee-free days of the year.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early for Tour Guide Debbie's walk at Plaza Salvador Brau. Late arrivals are not refunded.
  • San Juan Tours suggests comfortable walking shoes, light clothing, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle for its El Morro walk.
  • Getting there. Old San Juan fills the northwest corner of San Juan Islet, between the Atlantic and San Juan Bay. The islet links to the rest of the city through Santurce by three bridges (Dos Hermanos, G. Esteves and San Antonio), and the free trolley that once served the district is no longer available.
